STEM global experience: Smithie’s summer research internship in Germany

Maria Alvisi ’16, biology major and ethics minor, spent six weeks in Homburg, Germany as a researcher.

Maria worked in Jens Rettig’s lab at the University of Saarland. Prior to her internship, Maria took biology courses including a research class focused on bacteriophages. She attributes her success during the summer to the basic lab techniques and critical thinking skills she developed in that class. The highlight of her research experience was being able to perform a CD8 cell isolation independently. This experience marked the first time Maria has studied abroad, though she had traveled to Europe with her family previously.

To get her internship, Maria assertively contacted the principal investigator, and is currently looking for another science internship for summer 2014. She recommends other Smithies to send their resumes to any labs of interest because anything is possible.
