Freedom Riders

I absolutely loved being a Freedom Rider the other day, and I hope to be able to do so again soon. It was interesting for me to be a part of something that actually made a difference. If it wasn’t for us, the bus would have been segregated, and the Orthodox woman (pregnant, no less!) wouldn’t have sat in the front next to Ayelet. She would have had to go to the back. I haven’t encountered anything that has made me feel so satisfied in the States- most of the time I just go to demonstrations where I see no concrete change. In this situation, I could watch the Orthodox men squirm as they stood semi-defiantly in the front of the bus (despite there being seats in the back), I could see the Orthodox women hesitate and move forward and then shy away, I could see the half-smiles on the secular population as they looked at the stupid tourists. I really thought it was a wonderful experience, and I look forward to doing it again. I think that, as many of our speakers have said, using religion to segregate and discriminate against a group of people is unacceptable- hopefully our defiance will slowly change things for the better.
