Is Everything Closed on Shabbat?

As some of the others mentioned in the blog earlier, everything closing down on Shabbat is surprisingly frustrating. However, I guess after two months we are starting to figure out what places are open anyway (now getting there is the only problem).

We are now able to walk to a supermarket that is about 5 minutes away from the dorms that is open on Shabbat. The Muslim Quarter is also open on Shabbat, which includes both the French and Austrian Hospice if we want to go somewhere and have a drink. The Muslim Quarter also includes many Christian Holy sites, including the Via Dolorosa, The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and others.

Also, there is a fair amount open around the dorms. The falafel place around the corner from the dorms, French Hill Falafel is open on Shabbat and its also some of the best falafel I have had so far in Israel. The Aroma between the dorms and the Hebrew University campus is also open on Shabbat. This came in handy while writing my paper because serious work in the dorm was just not happening for me.

In conclusion, while most things do close down for Shabbat not everything does. In order to go out you have to be willing to take a taxi, sometimes go a little out of your way, or just be aware of your surroundings. Overall, Shabbat is now far less frustrating and isolating than it was in the beginning of the summer.
