New browser – Dolphin HD

Just downloaded a new browser for my iPad – Dolphin HD. It shows the tabs across the top for the different pages I’ve opened. It also seems to have a number of useful shortcuts for iPad, and has compatibility across multiple iDevices.

iPad Photography: how best to take a picture

1. From Apple’s iPad2 Manual about Camera:
Use the screen to control the back camera and to see the photo or video you’re
taking. You can tap anywhere on the screen to select a specific object or area, and
automatically adjust the exposure based on that part of the image. Autofocus (up to
about 4 inches or 10 cm) and a 5x digital zoom let you take great close-ups.

If you have an Internet connection and location services is turned on, photos and
videos are tagged with location data. You can use location data with some apps and
photo-sharing websites to track and post where you took the photos.

2. There are many Camera Apps, including 10x Camera Tools Pro, Incredibooth, Camera+, QuadCamera, Camera Bag, Timelapse. These offer additional control over your shoot such as camera modes, as well as digital zooming, a timer, full screen shooting.

iPad alternatives as of November, 2011

Of course, we are interested in exploring what mobile computing in general has to offer teaching enhancement so I am listing here tablets other than iPad2, which are said to offer other kinds of features and/or additional power and storage. Please see a very useful article on Appolicious at http://www.androidapps.com/tech/articles/10206-the-best-tablet-alternatives-to-the-ipad-2 .

As of November, 2011 but not meant to be comprehensive:
Amazon Kindle Fire
B&N Nook Tablet
Samsung Galaxy Tab (7-inch, 8.9-inch or 10.1-inch screens)
HP Slate (Windows 7 software)
Lenovo Thinkpad
Asus EE Pad Transformer Prime (10.1-inch 1280×800 touchscreen, 1GB of RAM and 32GB ( or 64G) of storage )
Toshiba Thrive
Archos 70 or Archos 101
The Freedom 10 from Androidworldusa.com. Theirs is 10″, has 2 USB I/O ports, a HDMI port, full browser, Android apps, Mini-SDcard slot and half the cost ($249) of the iPad2 and Galaxy.

Ipad Learning Community: More Useful Apps

So a couple of apps I like:

JotNot Pro:  Let’s you take photos and turn them into multi-page pdf documents. So if I need something on the fly, I can take pics with the iphone or ipad (I have the old one w/out a camera) and lets you make them into a single pdf emailable document. So kind of like scanning a multi-page document when you don’t have a scanner nearby and handy.

Stitcher:  This app let’s you set up podcast “channels” for yourself. That way you can hear recent-ish episodes without having to download the files to your device and take up space.  I’m an addict of several podcasts, so this has helped me a lot.

Flash multimedia

Sometimes, you will visit a website that has a video that you will want to play but find that it does not work on your iPad. Flash multimedia does not work on iPads. To date, there has been no business agreement between Adobe and Apple.

Office2 HD

Office2 HD, the most intuitive and straightforward office document tool available on the iPad, makes it easy to open, view, create and edit Word (DOC & DOCX), Excel (XLS), and now PowerPoint (PPT) files right from your iPad!

Safari on My iPad Froze

Safari can freeze up. The iPad screen will look greyed out. Clicking on any links will not be possible.
When it happened to me I opened a different browser and looked for a solution. Fortunately, an Apple forum had a very useful post. It works:

Go to Settings–Safari. Clear history, cache, and cookies. Restart iPad (turn off by holding down the Sleep button until Power Off appears on screen and then turn on by holding down on Sleep button until Apple logo appears).

Browser Apps for iPad: a few ideas

Mozilla Firefox Mobile

There is no Firefox app for iPad at this time.  You may have seen ads online for Mozilla Firefox Mobile.  This is an app for Android or for the iPhone.  Important:  it is not a browser complete in itself.  Firefox Mobile  might be described as a helper app completely subjugated to your browsing  at your desktop computer.  Please see the cute video at the Mozilla site for a full explanation.

Safari, as Mac users have known it for long years on their desktop computer, is still Safari when used on the iPad.  It comes with any iPad.

Atomic Lite is a browser app with tabs.  Hurray for tab browsing.  More than one website or multiple webpages can be pulled up at a time.

Browser+ developers say that other browsers for the iPad “don’t fully utilize the unique abilities of a touch screen environment.”  This app gives lots of screen real estate by making the menus disappear.  The viewer must swipe from the left side (right side) to pull menus and the visited pages ( in place of a back button).  Swipe from the bottom to access the search box, the address box, and the onscreen keyboard.  Interesting.  5/11
