SGI-USA NW Massachusetts Area

The SGI-USA NW Massachusetts Area is part of the New England SGI region and extends throughout the 40 districts in Massachusetts. The SGI-USA is a global organization founded by deceased President Tsunesaburō Makiguchi in 1930 and currently run by President Daisaku Ikeda. The SGI stands for the Soka Gakkai International and is a Nichiren Buddhist organization based around the chanting of the mantra Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

There are four local districts: Northampton, Springfield, Chicopee, and the Berkshires. The SGI differs greatly from most American Buddhist groups or organizations because the meetings take place in the homes of the members rather than a designated building or space. Larger meetings may take place in community centers or some SGI acquired buildings, but the majority are in the local community.

The meetings are based around chanting and then discussion on certain topics presented by local SGI leaders or monthly themes. District leaders are not appointed based on superiority in knowledge or practice but on responsibility. This means that leaders are more willing to help the organization and dedicate more time, rather than being “better” than other members. There is no fee for going to a meeting. Once a member has been chanting for a certain amount of time, they may receive their Gohonzon, which signifies actual membership. The Gohonzon is the main sacred object of devotion while chanting, and costs a small fee $20. Donations are asked for once a year but aren’t required.

There are a variety of meetings that take place within the district. Each month there is a discussion meeting that focuses on a certain pre-determined topic. The basis of most meetings revolve around an experience given by a member that serves as “proof” of change in one’s life condition. There are also study meetings, and other SGI activities. As well, once a month the region meets at the Easthampton Community Center,12 Clark St, Easthampton, MA 01027, to chant for world peace (kosen rufu).
