Northampton-Hatfield Scholarships

Magic File on the Northampton / Hatfield Scholarship

1919. Trustees vote to waive tuition for admitted students who had lived in Northampton for at least three years prior to the date of admission. 1923. Tuition waiver extended to residents of Hatfield. 1951-52 or 1952-53. Residence requirement changed to five years. 1958-59. Full-tuition waiver changed to $1000 flat scholarship. (tuition was $2200 per year) 1961-62. Scholarship increased to $1200 per year. 1963-64. Scholarship increased to $1350 per year. 1966-67—present. Amount of scholarship no longer specified; described as “partial tuition.”

The scholarship was guaranteed for all four years as long as the student remained in good standing (even, we believe, if her family moved from the area during her time at Smith—though we are not entirely certain of that). All information is taken from the Official Catalogues / Bulletins, from the “General Information” sections in the earlier bulletins and the Financial Aid sections in the later bulletins. Neither the Archives nor Student Financial Services has records of how many students have actually taken advantage of the scholarship over the years.
