BLUE PENCIL CLUB Blue Pencil was an odd-class literary society whose membership was based upon literary ability and congeniality. The goals of the society, which was founded in 1913, were “to find, encourage, and improve literary talent by friendly criticism” and meetings occurred once every two weeks. Each member to attend a meeting was required to submit a paper to the “reader,” an appointed student who read each paper aloud for the group and helped to organize a system of criticism. Sometimes topics were assigned, but more often, members were able to write about anything they pleased. Club activities were last documented in 1929.
