Before her death in 1870, Sophia Smith had a vision for creating a college for women with the “means and facilities for the education equal to those which are afforded now in our Colleges to young men.” With the counsel of her pastor, John M. Greene, she laid the groundwork in her Last Will and Testament for creating Smith College.
