Video Pre-Production

Pre-production is the single most important phase of the video creation process, serving as the project foundation that melds client ideas with professional creative processes. Visualization of the program prior to production is invaluable in solidifying producer/client agreement on the definition of the product and what is trying to be achieved.

Pre-production begins with a concept statement, a brief summary of the theme and purpose of the video. Once the core concept is defined, include program objectives as well as the primary target audience, sources of information, potential contributors, and the creative approach. Complete the pre-production phase with a schedule of project deadlines, accompanied by a clause indicating who owns rights to the production and who will be responsible for the distribution of the program in specified formats (program deliverables).

A detailed project plan facilitates essential program logistics needed to complete the production.

  • Craft a script to serve as the master plan for the project. Outline scenes of the production to include visual elements, props, narration, and animations.
  • Identify and secure locations before production begins. Assess locations based on aesthetic value, relevance to topic, acoustics, cost, utilities, and accessibility.
  • Conduct talent selection in conjunction with location scouting. Assess potential contributors based on expertise, dress, posture, voice, and ability to speak in a concise and confident manner.

Use a video pre-production planning tool to gather essential project information and make sure to reference any dependencies such as review timeframes and approvals. In-depth planning ensures quality results in both production processes and end product.
