桜(さくら)

これはおもしろい本でした。私(わたし)は子(こ)どもの時(とき)Washington DCで桜(さくら)を毎(まい)ねん見(み)ましたから。日本(にほん)のちいきがたくさんあります。ちがうのちいきで桜がちがうの時間(じかん)にさきます。

I would recommend this book to students who are finishing their first semester of Japanese. Reading this book is a good way to practice many of the kanji we learned. It was also interesting to learn about the regions of Japan and how that affects the cherry blossom trees. The illustrations were very pretty, so the book was fun to read.

ゆかた、よかったら

この本はおもしろいと思います。エミさんとニナさんゆかたを買 ってお ぼんおどりに行きました。かんじとたん語がかんたんです。I really loved the art style, its simple and cute. There were a couple of words that I could not recognize but its still understandable through context. There were also some unfamiliar kanji but they were accompanied by the hiragana.  Overall, I highly recommend to level 0 readers.

This was really interesting book about Japanese marriage ceremonies.  I learned a lot from this book, like the sort of clothes the bride and groom wear at a wedding ceremony and some of the things they do.  There were quite a few new words, but the pictures were very helpful in determining what the unknown words mean through context.  The grammar was also all forms that 1st year Japanese students have already learned, so that part made it easier to read too.  I highly recommend  this book to 1st year students!

寿司

この本はとても面白いです。ストーリーがありませんが、インフォがたくさんありますから。私は寿司を作って食べるのが大好きです。だから、この本を読んで寿司の歴史と作り方をたくさん勉強しました。いろいろな魚の名前もたくさんあります。挿絵は可愛いです。いろいろな寿司の挿絵と写真があります。

I recommend this book. It talks a lot about the sushi culture. I learned all kinds of sushi and the correct way to eat and make sushi. I learned what 回転寿司 is. 新しい漢字があります。ちょっと難しですが、わかりました。挿絵は本当に助けましたから。

大阪でかぞくりょこう

この本で、サラさんとサラさんのかぞくが大阪に行きました。そこでたくさんおいしい食べ物を食べて、大阪城を見ました。大阪から京都に行きました。京都においしいカフェラテを飲みました。スミス大学で日本語をべんきょうします、日本で日本語を話しますから。

In this book, Sara and her family went to Osaka. There, they ate lots of delicious food, and saw Osaka-jo.From Osaka, they went to Kyoto. In Kyoto, she drank a delicious Cafe Latte. She studies Japanese at Smith College, because she will speak Japanese in Japan.

This book was interesting to read. Since it is a personal story of a student, it was fun to see what she did in Osaka. The pictures were also nice, as they added to the authenticity of this book. There were a few words and kanji that I didn’t know at first, but it was easy enough to approximate the meaning from context and pictures. For this reason, and since it was interesting and informative, I would recommend this book to other first year students.

きむらけの毎日 「おしょう月」

このほんは、とてもおもしろくて、たのしいです。I found this book really fun to read. It describes a traditional Japanese New Year’s celebration. There are many illustrations to help the reader understand what’s going on since some of the vocabulary is new.  The story is very cute and sweet.

I would recommend this book for level 1 Japanese students. It wasn’t too difficult and a really nice introduction to Japanese New Year. The sentences are short and simple and there are several Kanji that are taught by the second semester of Japanese 110 so it’s great practice.

笠地蔵

「笠地蔵」のほうが「女の子」よりいいと思います。おじいさんとおばあさんはとても可愛くて、素敵な人です。漢字と単語は難しくないですよ!この本も、辞書が必要としなくてもいいですよ。読んでください!

I think “Kasa Ji Zou” was better than “Girl.” The old grandfather and old grandmother are cute, kindhearted people. The kanji and tango is not difficult. With this book, you also don’t need to have a dictionary.

この本はおもしろいです。着物のれきしがあります。着物を作れますよ!たくさん習いました。

I would recommend this story to any Japanese students who want to learn more about Japanese culture. The grammar is easy, but there are a lot of kimono-related vocab terms that are unfamiliar. I also found the different ages unfamiliar. That being said, the pictures made even the words I didn’t know easy to understand.

落語が声を中心とした狂言ので、この本がちょっとつまらないはずでした。でも、読んだ時、面白くて落語に興味にならせたと思いました。三つ話があって、一番目は一番好きでした。善助がとてもかっこいいと思います。

This book starts with a brief explanation of rakugo, before moving on to tell three short stories that might be found in a rakugo performance. I’d thought that I would only read one and put it down for the day, but ended up reading all three. Even without the performer telling them, they’re still entertaining. It’s not the easiest of reads, but I’d still recommend it to someone who was looking for a laugh.
