I definitely recommend this book. It is filled with extremely interesting explanations of names of things in Japanese, and I think it is helpful to understand the origins of words in any language that you speak. I have always been interested in word origin and etymology and didn’t know anything about Japanese etymology, so it answers a lot of questions. The book is quite long, but it’s something you can come back to again and again and learn new things. Please read this book!

桃太郎

Image result for 桃太郎

桃太郎という話はアメリカではたくさん日本語を勉強する学生の知っている日本の昔話だと思います。桃太郎さんは犬とさると鳥と一緒にアドベンチャーに行ったり、おばけを戦いました。この本は子供のためにか書かれたので、読みやすいです。でも、とても面白くて楽しかった話だと思うから、私は大好きです。日本の昔話を好きな人にももたろうをすすめりたいです

Momotaro is a cute story about a boy who goes on an adventure with a dog, monkey and bird.  The book is pretty easy to understand as it is written for children and has a lot of pictures.  It is great for anyone interested in Japanese old stories.

芥川龍之介短編集 蜘蛛の糸鼻

この本には、二つの話があります。「蜘蛛の糸」に書いた地獄はとても怖いに気がします。この話を読むと、他の人を助ければ自分も助かります。それに「鼻」に書いた話はみなの多様性を大切にするのことを教えてくれましたが、私はお坊さんだったら、鼻を大きくなるのはやっぱり嫌だろう……

There are two meaningful stories in this short story collection about the importance of selflessness and self-appreciation. I am surprised to see how the story about the long nose has some connection to our 多読 project.

ももたろう

ももたろうという昔話のタイトルをよく聞きましたが、どうゆう話か分かりませんでした。だから、私はこの本を読みたかったです。ももたろうはとても有名な話なので、この本をすすめます。日本語を勉強している学生はみんな読んだ方がいいと思います。読むと昔話の事をもっとわかるようになれるからです。

Some parts were difficult to understand, in particular, the dialogue during when Momotarou gave the animals the food. I’m guessing that had something to do with them following Momotarou to the mountain, but I didn’t really understand why they followed him. However, the kanji had furigana next to it, so the kanji itself did not hinder reading. The pictures in the book helped with understanding of the storyline.

マイマイとナイナイ

この本を初めて読んだ時、私は本に出て来る漢語の意味が分かれなかったから、あまりおもしろくなかったですけど、後に漢語の意味をさがして、本の内容がおもしろくなりました。よんでください。作家は特別そうぞうりょくを持っています。小さい弟が姉の目に入ることはとても一般的ではないそうぞうりょくで生まれたと思います。

This story book is has a very creative story of Maimai and Nainai’s short adventure. Maimai finds a younger brother who is so tiny that Maimai’s parents can’t see him, but only Nainai can. When Maimai takes Nainai who lives in a walnut shell to the woods, a horse comes running at Maimai, damaging her right eye. Nainai goes into Maimai’s right eye and explores the world while Maimai is asleep. One day Nainai grabs Maimai’s dreams by the tail and pulls it in Maimai’s head, making Maimai impossible to stop dreaming.  However, unfortunately Nainai gets pulled into the dream, making Maimai to forever look for Nainai in her dreams.

歴史を生きた女性たち

私は最近歴史を生きた女性たちという本を読みました。私はまだ終わっていませんがすぐ全文読みたいです。この本は色々な有名な女の人のバイオグラフィーがあります。例えば、オードリー・ヘップバーンや相馬黒光やヘレン・ケラーのバイオグラフィーがあります。この本はたくさん漢字を使うから、難しと思いますがたくさん写真もあるから、私は読めると思います。この本はたくさん女の人の話があるから、とても面白いと思います。

This book is filled with biographies of various women.  It is a little hard to understand because it uses a lot of kanji, but because there are many pictures, I was able to understand most of it.  It is a very interesting book, especially if you are interested in learning about women who have had an impact on their societies and world.

チーズスイートホーム

高校の時、友達に「チーズスイートホーム」をオススメされました。最近、このオススメを覚えて本を読むことにしました。読んでよかったです!チーはとてもかわいいと思いましたが、チーの家族が一番好きでした。チーにリアクションすることがとても面白いと思います。

Okay, so I know that the last book I reviewed was also a light-hearted children’s manga, but I still recommend this one too. Once again, the fact that it’s aimed at children means that it’s easy to follow even if you don’t understand every word. This has more of an ongoing story, but it’s still cute and not very serious, which is nice. Chi does have a tendency towards baby-talk, which can be a little confusing at times, but on the whole it’s still understandable and a fun read.

かげのこいびと

この本で初めてかげの話を読みました。最初はちょっと変だと思うけど、かげさんと由子さんの話しを読もと、とても面白くなりました。気持ちがよくない時この本を読んだら、うれしくなれます。となりの人々に感謝と興味があれば、それを最高です。皆さんぜひ読んでみてください。

This is a heart-lifting book to read when you are having a bad day or as Yuko who recently had a fight with someone important in your life. Sometimes all you need is a positive mind and apologies and an accepting heart.

オノマトペラペラ

この本はちょっとじしょのような本だので、全部読みませんでしたが、読んだ分はとても面白かったと思います!英語が始めにだけ話せる人として、日本語のオノマトペはいつも難しかったです。英語で、オノマトペはいつも音ですが、日本語で、オノマトペのコンセプトもあるから、分かりにくいです!ぜんぜんやさしくなるでしょうが、オノマトペやマンガが好きだったら、この本は楽しいかもしれません。読んでください!

I didn’t intend to read this whole thing, since it’s sort of a glossary of Japanese onomatopoeia, and very long. But it consists of little comics explaining the onomatopoeia, which I found to be fairly easy to understand – they use a lot of familiar vocab, and almost entirely familiar grammars, and they’re very simple. Plus, the book provides romaji and a translation, so you can check yourself as you go! I would definitely recommend this to 2nd years. (Plus, the pun in the title is just. So enticing.)

Definitely read this if you want a break from reading textbook-formatted stories. Even when you don’t know where the story is going, the visuals help you regain your position of understanding of the storyline. The book is consisted of four to five short stories with easy plots glimpsing into only a few of Doraemon and Nobita’s daily adventures.
