land acknowledgement

this project was inspired by and is displayed on land stolen from the Nonotuck peoples. i acknowledge the history of colonialism and genocide of Indigenous people that this land and space carry and acknowledge the Indigenous peoples and communities that continue to live on this land today. in addition to the Nonotuck peoples, i want to acknowledge the neighboring Indigenous nations: the Nipmuc and the Wampanoag to the East, the Mohegan and Pequot to the South, the Mohican to the West, and the Abenaki to the North. Dutch and English settlers of the 17th and 18th centuries invaded these lands, brought with them disease, including small pox, and prompted conflict with local tribes that resulted in a violent and deadly stealing of land. as i encourage individual and collective connections to land i encourage each participant to learn about the history of the land they inhabit and how you can support Indigenous communities local to you. this Native Land map is a place to begin.
