MUX Student Spotlight: Maija Brennan

This past summer I had the opportunity to complete research with the Wells International Foundation in Paris, France with the goal of curating a digital exhibition for their website. Over the course of eight weeks I researched Beauford Delaney, an American painter associated with the Harlem Renaissance and Abstract Expressionism, in French libraries across Paris. I focused in on Delaney’s portraiture work in particular, and how those works represent some of the most important relationships in his life. In addition to the digital exhibition, I wrote for WIF’s blog specifically on Delaney, Les Amis de Beauford Delaney. The Wells International Foundation and its CEO, Dr. Monique Wells, work tirelessly to educate the French and American public on Delaney’s life and art production, as much of his legacy was put on the backburner after his death in 1979. It was an amazing experience in not only learning what goes into curating an exhibition, but also what scholarly research in a different country and language entails. Through this internship I gained skills in art historical research and writing, and insight into how nonprofits in the art world function as opposed to larger museums or institutions of art.
