Welcome! I am an assistant professor of government at Smith College, where I teach and write about the domestic politics of mainland China and Taiwan, ethnic politics, and political economy. I have also written on the use of student response software to improve teaching and learning in the political science classroom. My work has been published in Governance, China Quarterly, and Journal of Political Science Education. Before joining the Smith faculty in Fall 2018, I was the China Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation and an assistant professor of political science at Villanova University. I am currently a member of the U.S.-Taiwan Next Generation Working Group. You can contact me at snewland [at] smith [dot] edu.
