Christ United Methodist Church

The Christ United Methodist Church is located in Florence, Massachusetts, just a short way away from Smith College. The Christ UMC is a part of a long history of Methodism in the United States. Methodism is a Protestant Christian religion that has been practiced in the United States since the 19th century. In 1968, a distinct change for Methodism occurred during the Uniting Conference, in which the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church united together through a shared constitution to become the United Methodist Church. The constitution lays out the framework for worship for all of its churches and congregations, which includes universal worship, and an emphasis on freedom and inclusivity within the church. There is an organizational set up of the church that includes international, national, regional, and local bodies that all work together under one United Methodist Church constitution.

The services at Christ UMC include an opening prayer and musical piece played on the organ. Members are invited share any thoughts or information about their personal life, and the congregation prays together for each individual member who shares. There are readings from the Bible, and a prayer together as a group. The pastor gives a reading and a sermon, and there are also opportunities for the congregation to join together in song with hymns. At the end of the service, there are closing announcements led by the pastor, and leading members of the congregation share information regarding upcoming events and opportunities for members to become involved in work with the surrounding community.

Those who attend the church are devout members of the congregation, and many of them have been members of Christ United Methodist Church since its inception 1976. The people of the Christ United Methodist Church have strong community ties, and engage with the surrounding community through events and community outreach programs.  The congregation is full of passionate and caring individuals who make the church a warm and welcoming environment for all those who wish to visit.
