Episode 12 || 26 October 1980 || Synopsis || Analysis || Old Country Wisdom || Manor Trivia
Fourth episode of Series 2 (six episodes)
Richard's tolerance of Audrey's insistence on Grantleigh tradition is strained when she demands he take in a tramp.

Arthur Smith, an itinerant beggar, is in the area for his annual visit; he roams the countryside and spends a few weeks working at each of the estates during their busy seasons. Audrey is gracious about him but Mrs Patterson is less than impressed; "scruffy beggar, ruining the look of the place!"

Equally umimpressed is Ned, who despite his reservations is called into service to cook for Arthur. "We should be appreciative," Audrey points out. "Ever since the welfare state there haven't been enough tramps to go around."
