Casting Stones

Excerpt from Casting Stones.

Casting Stones is a 16 mm, black and white experimental documentary film made after the death of the filmmaker's mother. The filmmaker contextualizes her sexual identity within a 1960's traditional family via an analysis of her relationship to her mother and their gender constraints. Both are trapped within social constructs and gender roles, though during uplifting parts in the film, the viewer floats out of those constraints. The weaving of tragedy and comedy allows for a fuller emotional viewing experience. Everyone experiences the death of a parent. The filmmaker humanizes this lived experience through a moving portrait of a young queer artist. Through stop action animation, old film footage and narrative reenactments, Lucretia discusses herself, her mother, some of her mother's idiosyncratic behaviors, some of her own, as well as trying to cope with losing such an amazing person. Saturday night Audience Award, Media City II, Windsor Ontario, 1996.
