Caption: The American Frankenstein: "Agriculture, Commerce and Manufacture Are All in My Power. My Interest is the Higher Law of American Politics."

Source/Date: Daily Graphic, April 14, 1874

Creator: Frank Bellew

Remarks: One of the all-time great railroad cartoons. The railroad, far from being a force for progress, has evolved into Frankenstein's monster. Carrying the club of capital he has kicked over the bucket (commerce?) and spilled the farmers' corn. He has torn the judicial ermine and receives the salute of the law.
