Remarks: William Vanderbilt as the head of the Standard Oil Octopus. Standard Oil bargained with the trunk line railroads to obtain rebates (discounts) on oil shipments which gave it a cost advantage over rivals. New York Central rebates helped Standard crush the Empire Transportation Company, as the cartoon suggests.
