Remarks: Jay Gould and William Vanderbilt have tied poor Uncle Sam to a telegraph pole, which looks a bit like a cross. He is bound with cords labeled New York World (which Gould controlled), New York Tribune, and Evening Express, while his feet are tied with trains. The heavy ropes over the poles, which look like snakes are labeled Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph and Western Union Telegraph.
