Remarks: Here Grover Cleveland is being initiated by Russell Sage, Cyrus Field, Jay Gould and William Vanderbilt. Cleveland was Governor of New York and vetoed a bill that would have set the fare of the New York Elevated at five cents. Companies claimed it would not allow them the required return on investment and critics claimed that the investment consisted of watered stock. These same issues would return, but on a national state in the twentieth century.
