Rogers Remarks: Railroads appear in this is simply one of many monopolies. Besides the "land grabbing railroads" there are the steel, coal, sugar, gas and oil trusts. The cartoon is also a good example of the dualism that shaped much of this period's thought: business monopoly vs. labor anarchy. In fact, much of the anti-monopoly rhetoric seems to have reflected worries that business activities would encourage labor "anarchy." Keywords: Trusts
