Jose Cumba under the boiler where rags are bleached at Parsons Paper Company, Holyoke, Massachusetts, 1990 |
"Every day I put the material inside the boiler
and wash and bleach it. Then I take it out with a hoe. I came [to the United States] to
work. There are no jobs in Puerto Rico. Here there are jobs. If I go back to Puerto Rico,
maybe I make $150 [a week]. Here I make $245. But in Puerto Rico you don't have a lot of
expenses, like heat. Here I have to pay for my heat. I pay $390 for my apartment. In
Puerto Rico I would pay $130. It's cheaper to live in Puerto Rico, but there's no
jobs." |
