Zigberto Garcia tells fellow student protesters to return to school in front of City Hall, Holyoke, Massachusetts, 1991 |
"Chanting 'Save our schools" and
'Education,' about 300 Holyoke High School students left classes and marched to City Hall
yesterday to protest school budget cuts that they say threaten their education. Lorenzo
Sigberto, a senior and leader of the walkout, said voters' decision last week to reject a
$3 million Proposition 2½ override, which would have restored teachers and courses,
prompted students to speak out. "We have no say in what is going on in our
school," he said. The march, he said, was intended to draw the attention of city
officials and the public to the substandard educational conditions. Some students carried
placards that read, "We want our education back" and "Give us a chance for
a good education." |
