Bernardus [Bernardo]  Pisano [de Paulis, Paulo]

Soprano; Florence;  born  12 October 1490; singer in the cathedral of Florence and Baptistry,   1511 - 1513 ; admitted 20 August  1514  [according to the list in  DS  2, fol. 94v]; earliest reference, picks up monthly payment for the chapel in July  1515  [ IE  554]; notarial list of September  1522 ; supplication lists of [ 1525-1526 ]; receipt lists of [ 1525-1526 ] and December  1526 ;  mandati : July-September  1529 ; April  1530 -February  1548 ; see  FREY  (1956): 413-414 for a bull dated 1 November  1517 ;  died  in Rome on 23 January  1548  and was buried in Santa Maria sopra Minerva [ DS  2, fol. 38v];  punctator  in  1537 ;  dean  as of December  1530 , although he is replaced in the months that  Scribano  returns to the choir.

FREY  (1955): 63 conflates Pisano with the singer Bernardus  Benedicti  who was admitted in August  1514  (see  Benedicti ), referring to a "Bernardus Benedicti (auch de Paulis)." This would seem to be correct, first because Pisano's father was named Benedetto (so he would have been called in Italian "Bernardo di Benedetto Pagoli") and also because a Bernardus Benedicti de Paulis, cleric of Florence and singer in the chapel, who can only be Pisano, was a witness for a notarial document in 1523 [see Document 2.6]. The only problem with the identification is the low salary of 4 ducats assigned to Bernardus Benedicti in August 1514, so it is still possible that he was a different singer.
