About Kate Lee

Kate is a national award winning writer and producer, and an Adobe and Apple certified master trainer specializing in non-linear editing and motion graphics design. After thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in 2002, she arrived at Smith where her job responsibilities include instructional design, curricular development, and multimedia production. Lee’s primary focus is to facilitate knowledge building and creativity through the leverage of instructional design and technology. Working closely with subject content experts, she provides consultation on instructional learning theories, copyright, accessibility, and the technical aspects of online education. Prior to Smith, Lee served as Media Consultant at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she built and managed a professional video and audio recording studio.

Smith College LogoDuring her tenure at Smith, Lee has been involved in the design and development of multiple online courses including The Psychology of Political Activism, Take Control of Your Online Reputation, and Financing Life. She also serves as Director of the Digital Media Literacy program at Smith, an initiative that provides accelerated instruction in media project planning and management, copyright and ethical considerations, digital equipment operation, field production and post-production techniques.

NERCOMP LogoLee designs, develops, and delivers interactive eLearning modules with multiple points of engagement to ensure learner acquisition and mastery of content. Lee’s latest project is the design and development of a learning framework for one-credit, project-based modules covering a wide range of media technologies (aerial cinematography, data visualization, motion graphics).  She is a regular contributor to NERCOMP (NorthEast Regional Computing Program), serving as a professional development SIG Master (Special Interest Group) for media-related topics.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy

Lee is a FAA certified remote pilot dedicated to helping students explore their creative potential on the ground and in the air. As an advocate of media coverage for women in sport, Lee has produced programming for the NCAA, ESPN and the U.S. Olympic Committee. She produced the first national women’s basketball podcast show for ESPN and is author of Just for the Love of It, winner of the Women’s Sports Foundation Journalism Award, and Life in a Ziplock Bag, a personal reflection of thru-hiking the 2000+ mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. An accomplished pianist and guitarist, Lee often creates musical scores for her productions.

Johns Hopkins University EmblemLee holds a M.S.Ed in Digital Age Learning and Educational Technology from Johns Hopkins University, a M.S.Ed in Higher Education, a B.A. in Economics and Mathematics, and OLC Certification in Online Learning, Teaching, and Design.
