Key QDA Software Packages

I.  ATLAS.ti by Thomas Muhr, Scientific Software, Berlin, Germany. Distributed in the United States by Sage / Scolari.

www.atlasti.de

Windows version is visual, intuitive, focused on text, with fine search tools and includes network generating features. Continuously upgraded via online patches based on user feedback. (OK on Power Mac.)

II.  NUD•IST by Thomas and Lynn Richards of QSR, Melbourne, Australia.  Available through Scolari.

www.qsr.com.au

Has both Mac and Windows versions.  Project focused, with many search features and “system closure” features, but creates hierarchic networks only.  (Users report v3+4 don’t work well with Mac OS beyond v7.5.)

III.  HyperRESEARCH was developed by Sharlene Hesse-Biber of Chestnut Hill, MA, U.S.A. HyperRESEARCH is also available through Scolari.

Mac and Windows versions.  Includes unique “hypothesis testing” features.

IV.  The Ethnograph was developed by John Seidel of Amherst, MA, U.S.A.. The Ethnograph is also available Scolari.

Overall, a fine code and retrieve tool, few memo and no networking/theory development features.  Versions 5 less easy to use and far less capable then are either ATLAS.ti or NUD•IST.   .

V.  NVivo, new from Thomas and Lynn Richards of QSR.

www.qsr.com.au

Available from Scolari.  Windows 9x only, no Mac version.  In description, very much like ATLAS.ti, plus capabilities to display font in colors and to allow editing while coding.  Project focused.  (Scolari download much faster than QSR’s.)
