About Smith Model United Nations

Model United Nations is a simulation of the workings of the real UN by students who experience and learn international diplomacy in a challenging and original way. Model UN members play roles of real UN delegates, and different committees provide a wide range of experiences. To represent their country and their delegate’s position accurately, students do preliminary research on the relevant topics, which widens their horizons as well as improves their analytic skills. Participating in parliamentary debate, Model UN members learn to evaluate the situation objectively, formulate their ideas quickly, and present their arguments effectively. During the simulation, they recruit supporters for their cause, draft working papers, persuade their opponents or change their positions in real time, if necessary. Model UN is an excellent opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge learned in the classroom as well as improve public speaking and argumentation skills.

Smith Model United Nations encourages participation in and extends awareness of global affairs to the Five-College community. The Organization promotes a better understanding of the structure of the United Nations and its mechanisms for managing international peace and security.Join Model UN at Smith. We meet every Tuesday at 6:00 pm in Seeleye 105.
